u3a - Common questions and answers

The Anniversary quilt competition closes on the 15th November.

Is there a criteria for colour/types of fabric?

The patchwork should be standard quilting cotton. If doing painting or printing, use prepared for dyeing, or pre-washed, calico. Calico can also be used for embroidery.

Does the square need to be quilted?

The quilting will be done by the Quilter once everything has been assembled.

Not unless it’s a small (ie. 10”) whole cloth quilted square or if using an extra layer of wadding to give a trapunto effect. Please don’t use thick wadding.

What size should the block be?

The blocks should have a finished size of 10” with a 1” seam allowance all round. See diagram below

Seam allowance

What colours should be used in the Quilt squares?

The colours in the quilt square are left to the creator of each square. The design for the finished quilt includes sashing and borders in the u3a brand colours.

Are the blocks QAYG?  (Quilt as you go, for those new to quilting terms.)

No. Everything will be assembled and quilted by one person

A block that will be finished size of 10” square with a 1” seam allowance round it. Can be completed in any of the techniques mentioned – patchwork, appliqué, embroidery, cross-stitch, machine embroidery, painted, printed.

How about whole cloth quilts - are they allowed?

Yes, providing they comply with the size. Please don’t use thick wadding

If entry is not chosen will it be returned to the owner? What is going to happen to the squares that are not chosen for the quilt.

The lead volunteer organiser will be discussing with National/Regional trustees: A suggestion has been that squares not chosen for inclusion can be used by region/nation to create a local quilt.  We will update everyone on this. Only the chosen 40 will be asked to send their blocks.

How many squares can be submitted?

One per person or Interest group or u3a.

Can more than one member contribute to a square?

yes, they can.

Can each member of our patchwork and quilting group submit an entry or will it be just member of the group?

Any member of your patchwork group can submit an individual entry. In addition, the group can submit a group entry.

When is the closing date?

The photo of your completed square must be received by 15 November, via the entry form.

What is the theme for the  competition?

To celebrate the u3a 40th anniversary in 2022, we are launching a u3a-wide Anniversary Quilt competition on the theme of Positive Ageing through our strapline Learn Laugh Live. Please have a read of the competition rules and the entry form.

Can I add my u3a name to my quilt square?

There is nothing to stop you inserting your u3a name but the choice is yours. Remember the judges will be focusing on the design of your square.

I have made a mistake on my entry form. Can I change it?
