Latin for Beginners
Those who are completely new to Latin and those who have a little knowledge from schooldays are welcome, as are those who can happily translate ‘et cattus super tapete sedit’ or even the misquote ‘magna est veritas et praevalebit’. The group will use a combination of a Latin primer (Wheelock, F.M. and Lafleur, R.A., Wheelock’s Latin, 7th ed, London: Harper Collins, 2011 – which members will have to buy) and material that will be provided. Grammar will rear its ugly head, but the group will focus on translation and reading Latin texts. To help keep everything in context there will be discussion about the Ancient World, classical Latin authors and perhaps even occasional visits to read inscriptions and get a taste of life in Roman Britain.
