IGO January 24 News Extra

Dear reader,

Welcome to the January News Extra. Many best wishes for the year ahead.

In this edition, we have photos of green energy sites taken by members and a long-read article on hydrogen as an energy source. Many thanks in particular to members from our Countdown to COP group who have contributed to this.

For the coming editions of News Extra in February and March, we would welcome your short stories (around fifty words) and photos on a variety of topics. These could be

– It's a leap year this year. Did you propose on the 29th February?
– Shrove Tuesday. Have you a special pancake recipe?
– Valentines Day. A love story possibly?
- Or a story about the wildlife in your garden. Did you take part in the Garden Bird Watch – 26-28th January?

I hope this gives you food for thought – please send in your stories and photos to me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

IGO's Green Energy Photos

We've been collecting photos of green energy installations near IGO members' homes.

I have attached a winter photo taken at Whitelee Windfarm in Eaglesham near Glasgow is the largest onshore windfarm in the UK and produces enough electricity to power 350,000 homes. There is a visitor centre which offers tours, and the site is ideal for walking and cycling.

Thirteen years ago, we didn’t have suitable roof space for solar PV, so constructed this “pergola” for our panels (10m l, 1.5m w, 1.8m h).  This made room for ten 2.4kWp panels.  Armoured cable running under a path takes the generation to our home. The pergola faces due south but does have occasional shading from neighbour’s trees.   On average they have generated 1,800kWh annually.  I estimate we use about 600kWh directly exporting the remaining 1,200kWh.  We buy about 1,400kWh from Ecotricity.

We also placed two solar thermal panels on our rear roof which faces slightly north of west.  Although this is not optimal, they usually provide all the hot water we require for showers, dish washing, shaving, hand washing etc. between May and early September. We are hoping to replace our Worcester Green Skies very efficient gas boiler with a heat pump.  I believe, however, that, if we are to take up on a government grant, we will not be able to add the water heated by these panels to our tank.

A biomass energy facility near Nottingham.  The green dome is the roof of an anaerobic digester, in which agricultural waste is fermented to produce methane gas (biogas) and a liquid digestate.  The gas is used in a gas engine which turns a generator to produce electricity: the silver structures are the intake and exhaust hoods for the engines, which are inside soundproof enclosures.  The digestate is used as a fertiliser, which reduces the need to use artificial compounds.  Residual heat from the engines is used to dry grain in a nearby grain store.

At the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Wales, members of the group were able to see and learn about a wide range of alternative technologies.  This is the water balanced funicular railway, linking 2 parts of the site; it uses a tank of water on the carriage which is filled with water.  When the top one goes down, it pulls up the bottom carriage. Ad infinitum!  It is one of the steepest railways in the world and uses no electricity - and no fossil fuels.

    Why hydrogen?

David from the Countdown to COP group has written a long read about hydrogen as an energy source.

"The UK’s Primary Energy demand is the energy that we consume from all sources... The Government Hydrogen Strategy published in August 2021 2 predicts that by 2050 up to 35% of our primary energy will be delivered as hydrogen, so how will hydrogen become a major part of our energy consumption?"

A January book recommendation - Winter in Madrid by C J Samson

C J Sansom is more famous for his terrific series featuring an investigator Matthew Shardlake set in Tudor times – Dissolution, Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation, Heartstone, Lamentation, Tombland, - they are all splendid and well worth a read but this month I draw your attention to one of his stand-alone novels, Winter in Madrid.

It’s a spy novel set in 1940 just after the end of the Spanish civil war. Harry Brett, the main character is a wounded veteran. He finds himself in Madrid where Francisco Franco resided. Madrid in the Franco era is depicted and the author dwells on the fictional and non-fiction elements of his story in a handy epilogue.

‘A vivid and haunting depiction of the times’ – Amazon review

Coffee and Conversation Group - History based conversation starters

In a recent meeting of the Coffee and Conversation, we asked members to think of a period in history they would love to witness – this was by way of an experiment - using a specific topic as a conversation opener.

The resulting list of historic events we talked about was brilliant and members were able to gather in a couple of smaller groups to hear as many contributions as possible

All the choices are listed in the Long Read IGO's History-based Conversation Starters, from the building of the pyramids, Elizabeth the First at Tilbury, the Irish Famine to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. It's worth a look …
