We are asking members to share any photos which are 'wild and interesting' with us.

We would like you to share your photos of elements of nature or wildlife that are out of the ordinary. Anything that has challenged your perception of nature and the world around you.

Dolerite Dyke

This dolerite dyke was found at Scarlett Point, just south of Castletown in the Isle of Man. It was formed when hot molten rock, called dolerite, was forced upwards through a fissure in the limestone. The hot dolerite “baked” the limestone, creating parallel lines of weakness either side. The dyke was then created by the sea eroding away the dolerite.

Limestone formations in the Isle of Man.

Limestone Formations

Limestone slabs at Scarlett Point in the south of the Isle of Man. Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed of the skeletons of marine creatures which lived in the warm, clear waters of a tropical sea which covered the area during the Carboniferous period. The stone was quarried and used in local buildings, roads and railways. The three limekilns nearby also produced lime for mortar and agriculture.

I spotted this unusual looking butterfly whilst out walking near Melbourne in South Derbyshire. My wildlife reference book suggests it may be an adult Comma butterfly, which are seen between March and September.

Going Crabbing

On a stroll along the river at Burnham on Crouch in mid-September we were fascinated to see this young seagull dig around in the mud to find his crab before walking to some water to wash it before eating it.

This was taken on the flood plains by the River Frome in Wareham. There were a lot of deer about but a long way from where I was standing, this was the best shot I managed.

This bird was in our garden in East Devon in early September. At first I thought it was a juvenile gaining its adult plumage but then decided it was more likely to be an adult bird going through its post-nesting moult.

Cinnabar Moth Caterpillar

This was seen feeding on a ragwort plant near Castletown in the Isle of Man. Although this plant is poisonous, this insect builds up the poison in its body making it unpalatable to predators. Ragwort, known as cushag on the island, is said to be the Manx national flower.

I found this strange gall, 2 inches long and hollow, on an elm leaf in a St Albans park. It grows when Eriosoma lanuginosum lays eggs into a leaf in the spring.

This photograph was taken on a walk in a local glen in Bangor, Northern Ireland, after a period of intense rain turned a little stream into a fast moving river. The sun was out again but the water kept going until it would eventually reach the Lough.

Nature's Pattern

I love to look for patterns in nature. There are endless patterns if you look closely at flowers and leaves. This flower, which is a great example, was photographed in my friend’s garden.

New Life...

I found the little black bug on the peeling bark of our silver birch tree and put it into a jar to identify later. In the morning this almost translucent, 16 spotted, Ladybird appeared having hatched from what must have been the pupa. Well, I had never seen a “Halyzia sedecimuttata” before. Known as an Orange Ladybird it feeds on mildew that forms on the tree leaves. Delighted with my new find I popped it back where I found it.

Across the River Torridge, from Appledore

Low tide exposing the sands between Appledore and Instow, across the River Torridge. The sands can often be well populated with wading birds, especially noticeable when the tide is coming in. The tidal range here, off the Severn Channel, is one of the greatest in the World. The river has silted up over many years, although is navigable, with a large covered shipyard a little further up the river. On the hillside opposite is Tapley Park and House, and on the shore an old Lime Kiln.
