Book Groups

Have you always wanted to set up a book group but weren’t sure which books to choose? Are you already running a group but need some sparks of inspiration for the next book choices?

Our u3a Book Groups Forum is here to help. Subject Adviser for Book Groups, Richard Peoples, has plenty of suggestions on his Subject Advice page on areas such as book length and accessibility, subject matter and scoring and recommendations for books.

In addition to this we would love to receive reviews from your group on books you have read. These could be contributions from individuals or a summary of the feedback from the book group meeting. Please send these to Janine Aldridge, Learning Officer at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Sedgefield and District u3a book group have sent us these discussion notes on Tears of Amber  by Sofia Segovia. Swindon u3a runs several book clubs, including one called "Bookworms" who compile their Book Worms Book List for the next full year in the autumn of the year before. Everyone makes suggestions and they are brought to the group for discussion.

Any tips on how to run a good book group would also be greatly appreciated. For instance, how to make sure everyone has a chance to engage in the conversation.

We will publish these on this page to share with other members and groups and we will also have online meetings for members to share their thoughts and ideas over Zoom. We want to link people up so that the knowledge spread across the movement is shared between you all.

Our first meeting for book group leaders was on Friday 22nd April and was a great success. Members enjoyed sharing their experiences and ideas with each other and hearing some new thoughts. You can now book a place at the second meeting even if you didn't attend the first one! We always like seeing new faces.
