u3a - Paint or Draw - Lights

Theme is: Lights

'Greek island Sunset' by Gill Sedgebear of Kenilworth u3a

'Greek island Sunset' by Gill Sedgebear of Kenilworth u3a

I joined the Kenilworth U3A just before lockdown, so sadly have not experienced anything in normal life. This is my first go at getting involved with something.

The painting shows a sun setting on a special Greek island. The sun gives us all light and life. Especially when the sunlight dances on the water surface.

'Lighthouse' by Elizabeth Davis of Bromley u3a

I love lighthouses. This is Godrevy, St Ives. Light and hope in a dark world.

'Northern Lights' by Anne Harrison of Tadley & District u3a

Due to the pandemic, my cruise along the Norwegian coast was cancelled and so was my hope of seeing the Northern Lights. However, I was inspired to try and paint what I might have been lucky enough to see!

'Northern Lights' by Sarah Wiseman of Westbury u3a

I am an amateur artist learning to paint at 60 during the lockdown. I used an online lesson to do these Northern lights.

'Christmas Moon, Guildford High Street' by David Wrigley of Fleet u3a

'Christmas Moon, Guildford High Street' by David Wrigley of Fleet u3a

The full moon nearest Christmas rises at the top of Guildford High Street. It looks enormous, hanging among the Christmas lights.

'Lymington River at sunset' by Yvonne Paddy of Lymington u3a

'Lymington River at sunset' by Yvonne Paddy of Lymington u3a

This is the view from my window overlooking the Lymington River at sunset.

The light was amazing and showed up all the boat masts in the distance.

'Light bulbs' by Pete Akers of Sherborne u3a

'Light bulbs' by Pete Akers of Sherborne u3a

I was attracted to this image by the contrast between the sharp detail of the nearest light bulb and the fading focus of the further bulbs. The reflections of other reflections are unexpected and fascinating.

'December dusk' by Kate Garrett of Edinburgh u3a

I liked the outline of the buildings in December dusk. A few lights were just coming on in the houses.

'Bengal Eagle Owl' by Elaine Cross of Thatcham u3a

I chose to submit this piece of a Bengal Eagle Owl (pastel pencil on velour) because of the lights in his luminescent orange eyes. I find owls eyes mesmerising. My own reference photo taken at Beal Park, Berkshire.

'Light in the dark' by Malcolm Fowles of Reading u3a

'Light in the dark' by Malcolm Fowles of Reading u3a

Faced with a challenge to paint light, I went for the hardest - to capture the real glow of a flame such that the eye has to adjust to it. I think this gets very close. Do you?

'Northern Lights' by Jacquie Melia of Clitheroe u3a

'Northern Lights' by Jacquie Melia of Clitheroe u3a

This work was inspired by memories of a visit to Norway in my recent past. Memories have become very important during the COVID crisis and I have been using such to inform my work. Although the local, beautiful landscapes have continued to inspire me during this difficult time. The work is a mixed media piece incorporating collage, pastels and acrylic ink. It is part of a series on Northern Hills which I have been working on for a number of years. I hope to exhibit this series in the near future.

'Candlelight' by Gabrielle Summerhays of Farnham u3a

'Candlelight' by Gabrielle Summerhays of Farnham u3a

Winter candlelight brings hope, warmth and a new glowing light for the New Year. In oils on board.

'Lamp post' by Pam Cooke of High Lane u3a

'Lamp post' by Pam Cooke of High Lane u3a

The Victorian Lamp post in a bygone snowy Liverpool - think it’s seasonal but lockdown seems to make us think of different eras and time gone by.

'Mischievous deer' by Liisa Brown of Hartley Wintney & District u3a

'Mischievous deer' by Liisa Brown of Hartley Wintney & District u3a

Our U3A Art Group's challenge of the week was 'Anything to do with a Deer'.
My nosy, mischievous deer has got XMAS LIGHTS tangled around his antlers.
He is peering behind the window! Painting with Acrylic/Pen.

'Festive candlelight' by Paul Kearney of Edinburgh u3a

'Festive candlelight' by Paul Kearney of Edinburgh u3a

I felt that a festive painting of candlelight, berries and orbs would be appropriate for the seasonal challenge of "lights".
