The ‘Learning to be Retired’ course was created by Julia South (Sheffield U3A) and Carol Ellis (Bromley U3A). It has been a great success with participants and there is now an ‘off the shelf’ version of the course including a script, with accompanying hand-outs, that any U3A can use, verbatim or with their own adjustments, if they would like to run the course in their local area.

The course is short (five or six weeks) and intense (two hours per week). Course numbers should be limited to between six and twelve to ensure that all course participants are able to contribute. The course is not designed to instruct members on how they should manage their retirement, nor does it give advice about financial issues but, instead, prompts attendees to: think more deeply about what is important to them; consider whether they hold beliefs that are holding them back; and explore which of their skills might be transferable to life in retirement. It also reminds them of the many opportunities open to them and helps them develop the realisation that retirement, far from being just an ending, can, in fact, be the beginning of a potentially exciting and fulfilling stage in all our lives.

If you’d like to know more about running this course do get in touch with Carol Ellis (U3A Bromley) at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
