AI mimics human intelligence. Fake News has always been around. AI just makes it easier and quicker to produce. It is even more convincing in the form of audio and video cloning.
My objective is help all 400,000+ u3a become acquainted with AI. So they can understand how it can be used for GOOD and BAD purposes.
Our AI team are looking to help local AI Enthusiasts who want to run AI Beginners workshops, short courses, by providing them with course material, training and support. Please contact me to join the mailing list.
My Background
I took an A level in Computer Science in the late 1960’s. I taught Computer Science to teenagers. It was while teaching that I first became aware of AI developments. BT offered me a job in their R&D labs, working in a group looking at how AI could be used.
In my 20+ years with BT, I had many different roles - software engineer, requirements analyst, system design engineer, project manager, business case manager, research programme manager, product manager.
During my time as a teacher, I gained an OU degree in Computer Science,Mathematics and Education. BT sponsored me for an OU MBA in Business Administration.
Like 100,000 other BT employees, I took redundancy/early retirement. Technology meant our services were no longer required. My wife and I
hitched up the caravan, toured the UK and Ireland. We bought and renovated a bungalow and took up Ceroc dancing. Holidays in New Zealand and Australia were great fun. Lawn Bowls and Golf kept us fit and healthy.
In the Spring of 2023, I renewed my acquaintance with AI so I could chat with our grandchildren about AI. In the summer I developed an “AI for beginners” online library, that our 2,000+ u3a East Suffolk members could
access. It became very popular, with over a thousand reader visits in the first few months.
The Third Age Trust committee members became interested in our AI library and that led to me becoming an AI Subject Adviser.
I am passionate about “AI for everyone ”. We have learnt to safely use the Internet, Satnav, Smartphones. Now it is time to learn how to use AI safely.
