We are David Castle and Rob Kruszynski and share the Subject Adviser role for Chess.
We started a u3a Chess Club three years ago for people of all abilities which aims at playing and discussing chess theory in a convivial, cooperative and enjoyable atmosphere.
We have learnt a lot in the process and with the intention of encouraging the playing of Chess within the u3a we have started
The aims of which are to encourage u3a Chess Groups and the playing of Chess by u3a members using websites locally, regionally and nationally.
- By giving advice and encouragement in the setting up of u3a chess Interest Groups.
- By encouraging an appreciation of Chess as a worthwhile, enjoyable, accessible and socially enjoyable activity for all.
- By starting a self-perpetuating network of enthusiasts and experts to collect Chess relevant information. That expertise to then be made available to u3a – including internet Chess expertise.
- By collecting lists of active u3a Chess Interest Groups
- By collecting and making available information, for example, about Chess websites, books, as well as starting Chess Clubs, and generating teaching material for learners and those wishing to improve.
The resulting activities could include a regular or occasional Newsletter, Zoom meetings, Articles, Papers, publicity, forthcoming Chess Tournaments, etc.
Following a very supportive Zoom meeting in February this year we already have a group of u3a members from around the country interested in helping. We have created a website for the network u3achessnetwork.org.uk, where you can join the network and register to play in the leagues if you wish.
Please contact David if you would like to join the u3a Chess Network or for further information.
