In 1966, I was unfortunate to have a Brain Aneurysm which, finished my interest in football but provide me in 1968 with a lifeline in Crown Green Bowling.

In 1968, I was employed at the Universal Grinding Wheel Company in Stafford and they had two very different bowling greens. I was invited to come and try my hand at bowling which I did and was hooked straight away on the game and the people and I have never looked back.

I became Secretary of the Bowling Section which, put me in touch with Staffordshire County Bowling Association where one of my proudest moments was becoming the Deputy President and then the President of the Staffordshire County Bowling Association.

In March 2011, I became qualified as a BCGCS Foundation Level Coach and in April 2012, I became qualified as a BCGCS Club Coach.

I then decided that I would like to continue my interest in the game after I finished playing so I qualified as an “A Class Referee” and had the privilege of visiting many different Counties to referee County Matches and County Competitions.

I have been coaching at U3A Stafford and now U3A Burntwood for over 10 years and will continue as long as the body allows.

My aim as the subject advisor, is to provide a link between u3a’s that have crown green bowling groups and the british crown green bowling association (b.c,g.b.a.) who, are the governing body of crown green bowling and are responsible for providing and updating the laws of ther game of crown green bowls.

I have now produced for u3a, a basic coaching manual which, will allow u3a’s to address the new starters of the game by providing the basic skills required in the manual and then providing a member of their bowling group to follow each new starter through the manual requirements.

I have within the coaching manual provided a separate section on “laws of the game of crown green bowls” which are issued and amended by the british crown green bowling association and cover all aspects of crown green bowling.

I have also provided a separate section on “etiquette and green awareness” which, cover human behaviour on the bowling green?

It is my intention at the beginning of each bowling season, (which will normally start at the beginning of april each year), to produce a u3a crown green bowling newsletter which, will give me the opportunity to advise u3a’s of any amendments to the “ coaching manual”, “laws of the game”, “etiquette and awareness” and to highlight the u3a’s on what b.c.g.b.a. county fixtures and major competitions are taking place in their area.

The newsletter will also allow me to provide any information reference pandemics etc that, will have an effect on the game of crown green bowls.
