Learning in the u3a movement

Change is universal including the cycle of birth, life and death. I attempted to portray this cycle with these three candles. Unlit for birth/potential, lit for life and extinguished for death.

Get a move on. Don’t be late. Hurry up before the opportunity changes and the “to let” becomes “too late”. Great advertising – and it caught my eye and amused me!

Reflect on a year of Change. Throughout lockdown, we have regularly walked past the Community Garden on the grounds of Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital. A feature of the garden is a simple message board made of pebbles, it changes every few weeks to display a topical message. When lockdown started the message was “bide at hame” (stay at home) followed by “twa yairds” (two yards). Recent messages have included “vaccinate” and “hope springs”. The attached photograph shows the current message “reflect”.

My aim was to take a sequence of images of a miniature narcissus "changing" from bud to full flower. A bit of Photoshop magic resulted in the above image.

To convey changes, I decided to show the changes between bud and blossom of a willow.

With another 'Beast from the East' hopefully behind us and the prospect of a bit of warmth to cheer us all up, maybe it's time to think about a change of wardrobe, or is it still a bit early to put away those thermal vests?

The changing colours and light inspired me to take a picture of this ice cube as it changed from solid to liquid.

Recently I rediscovered a book called Fractal Cuts which showed how to transform flat paper into pop-up cards using only cuts and folds with nothing added or removed. It was tricky to light "Hanoi Arête", with its four generations of fractals developed from squares, once I had managed to change my cartridge rectangle into this design.

A landline with simple handset, a local telephone directory and Yellow Pages was all that was required to keep in touch with family and friends. Today a mobile phone, tablet or laptop, mp3 music player are essential for everyday living. There has been a big learning curve in lockdown with no young people or small grandchildren to show us how to use them!

A mid-winter sunset view of the ice & snow-covered surface of Threipmuir reservoir on the edge of Edinburgh as a high pressure weather system is eased aside by the leading edge of cloudy, milder air moving in.

Not used much nowadays as it's mostly changed to contactless

I spotted this fallen tree on a walk in the local park. The striking detail of the tree rings marks the change in seasons over many years.
