Learning in the u3a movement

Theme is: boxes, squares and/or rectangles

A trip to our local reclamation yard inspired this simple image of several old windows waiting to be recycled.

'Cheese' by Tessa Phillips of Potters Bar u3a

I saw a box of mixed eye-catching cheeses cut in squares and rectangles when I was shopping. The mice are going to take advantage of a tasty meal!

'Flats' by Bob Douglas of Edinburgh u3a

'Flats' by Bob Douglas of Edinburgh u3a

Looking up at a modern apartment block in central Edinburgh. Gray is not the most interesting colour, and the architecture is a bit brutalist, but somehow this composition seems to work - helped by a clear blue sky and the sunlight reflecting off the panels.

'Wooden Boxes' by Carol Donald of Wearside u3a

You didn't specify whether the theme was box shapes or just boxes so here is a selection from my husband's collection of boxes. Help, I'm running out of space!

'Squares' by John Guiver of Blackwater Maldon u3a

I spotted this chain link pattern on a pirate ship play area in my local park, with some beach huts behind it.

'Paintbox' by Ann Hooley of Ruddington u3a

'Paintbox' by Ann Hooley of Ruddington u3a

This is a photo of a very old, battered paintbox which consists of a number of rectangles and I think it is enlivened by the enclosed colours, as well as matching my preference for taking images of found objects.

'Cubes' by Angela Owen of Worcester Area u3a

These are amazing cubes. They look different from different angles, sometimes appearing simply clear, sometimes lines can be seen differentiating partitions within, and sometimes a single colour appears on one face, and then again, sometimes complex patterns show up. It’s like magic, or then again it’s “just” physics – did I say “just” physics!

'Containers' by Brian Moore of Belfast u3a

This was taken at the Titanic Studios in Belfast. It was the position of the containers to the studios that caught my eye and their different colours along with a nice blue sky

'Balconies' by Karen Coates of Solihull Central u3a

Squares and rectangles of an architectural nature on a building in Birmingham - caught my eye on a recent walk.

'Distant memories' by Ian Weatherley of Witham & District u3a

'Distant memories' by Ian Weatherley of Witham & District u3a

Being inspired by the latest u3a Eye challenge, I briefly investigated the contents of a little-explored cupboard housing thousands of old colour slides from the 70s and 80s. I grabbed a couple of random slide trays and a few other related items to create an image which, I hope, addresses all three of the subject themes, and then quickly shut the door again! Potentially a job for another day, perhaps?

'Crossword Man' by Harry Borgerson of Monks Brook u3a

'Crossword Man' by Harry Borgerson of Monks Brook u3a

During lockdown I have kept myself busy crafting, doing crosswords and taking photos. This robot was made using toilet roll centres, soft drink cans and pages from a puzzle magazine.

'Tide' by Tony Pelham of Warrington u3a

I was attracted by the colours & textures in the stone of this disused slipway at Spike Island in Widnes

'Hayward Gallery' by Christopher Cumming of Caterham & District u3a

'Hayward Gallery' by Christopher Cumming of Caterham & District u3a

The Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre London. A concrete monster to some or an amazing example of late 60's Brutalist Architecture. Love it or hate it I could just see so many shapes, amazing.

'Pen Pots' by Kaushalya Rihal of Balsall Common u3a

My boxes come in very handy for all my odds and ends

'Papers' by Lynne Hall of Witham & District u3a

I recycled this printers tray and had a lot of fun choosing the different papers to line each box. I felt it suited the current subject of boxes, squares and rectangles perfectly.
