Learning in the u3a movement

The photo is of detail from the Dunbar Old Town Hall taken a few days ago on holiday. I liked the fact that someone had taken the time and effort to make this divider house-shaped.

I spotted the contrast between the sky and the corrugated iron on this aircraft hanger at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome and thought it made for an interesting shot.

Reivaulx Abbey. Historic ruined abbey in North Yorkshire with impressive towering architecture- looking through the arches to tiny more modern quaint cottages in the village.

Paper architecture. Kirigami takes Origami one step further and involves cutting and folding paper. Made from one sheet of A4 card, when folded and opened to 90 degrees reveals a 3d model.

You would not think such a small area could contain so many, so large, buildings. This was taken in New York as the stormy evening light faded. It has been manipulated a little - not much - to emphasise the threat which remains in the lull of the storm.

Taken on 14 August 2021 at Wimborne Model Town & Gardens, close to Wimborne Minster town in Dorset. I had been there once but needed to take my wife who was enthralled by the models.

I have always thought that Lichfield Cathedral is breathtakingly beautiful. The gothic architecture of the west front showing saints, kings and queens is so magnificent that it’s difficult to take it all in. I settled on just the doorway for this shot taking in the fine detail and marvelling at the skill of it’s creation long ago.

This is a photo of the Royal Crescent in Bath. It was such a beautiful day, and everything seemed right with the world early in the year.

It's only after I'd put it all together that I found the instruction sheet. Close enough.

This unusual building is a Sticke tennis court - merging aspects of real tennis, racquets and lawn tennis. It is in Corsham; local to me but not well known.

Holidaying in Swanage we took the bus to Weymouth. I took this Photo of Corfe Castle as we passed. The castle has a rich history. It was founded by William the Conqueror over 1000 years ago. It is roughly triangular and divided into 3 enclosures. At the outbreak of the Civil War the castle was a challenge for Parliamentarian forces and ordered to be destroyed to prevent further military use. It is now owned by the National Trust.

This view appealed to me as you have the juxtaposition between the old and the new. The tall building is 20 Fenchurch Street also known as the Walkie Talkie building which hosts the Sky Garden restaurant and bars on its top floors.

This photo is of a Cambridge Street. It interested me because the chimneys are dominant and nearly as tall as the houses.

I was so fortunate to be able to visit ‘The Great Exhibition’ at Lichfield Cathedral, a light and sound show based on the theme of the ‘evolution of science’. It was truly spectacular and moving, especially as the appreciation of the contribution of science in our time has been elevated. In this photo, a modern light structure depicts DNA, the scientific understanding of the architecture of life. This is set amidst the ancient walls and windows of the cathedral, hallowed old building blocks pertaining to the architecture of religious faith. What a relevant contrast between these two, perhaps contradictory or perhaps complementary, ways of perceiving meaning in life.
