Designed and entirely hand-stitched on fine linen 80 years ago by my artistic, nature-loving Great Aunt, Lily Dale, for my sister aged two. To appreciate and honour her work and memory it is an ongoing project of mine to find and to photograph all of the 32 different wild flowers which she had sketched from life, stylized then embroidered, including :- Lady's Smock, Daisies, Valerian, wild Strawberry, Dog Rose, Red Clover, Honeysuckle, Bluebell, Harebell, Violet, Germander Speedwell, Forget-me-not, Pulmonaria and Comphrey to name just those on the back.

What an extraordinary experience I had this summer - being present within the circle of Stonehenge. This prehistoric man-made circle with stones up to 30 feet high, was erected around 2500 BC. It is thought to be have been a spiritual temple, which in tracking the movements of the sun, also cleverly informed the farming practices of early men and women by providing a kind of a seasonal sundial. Amazingly they transported many of the stones from Wales – terrific human effort! (This photograph was taken between the inner horseshoe and the outer circle configuration of the stones)
'Knightstone Island' by John Law of Shepton Mallet u3a

'Knightstone Island' by John Law of Shepton Mallet u3a

The manmade development that is Knightstone Island, Weston-Super-Mare, dates back to 1696. At the time the island was connected to the mainland by a natural pebble ridge. The island changed hands several times and it finally closed in 1991. In 2006-7 the whole island was redeveloped. The Bath House and front section of the ground floor of the Pavilion were converted into commercial premises. The rest of the Pavilion and the swimming pool were converted into homes and two new apartment blocks were built on the island. The Queen visited to re-open the island’s perimeter walkway on 20th July 2007. With very high tides the causeway to the island becomes submerged providing a dramatic leading line to this man made island development. The submerged causeway therefore provides the perfect compositional element that motivated me to take the photograph earlier this week. The descending sun positioned to the right of the image, together with the conversion to black and white further emphasises the strong structural elements of the buildings on the island.
