Hundreds of U3A members have attended Regional Summer Schools taking place across the UK in June.

One of the hottest day of the year so far didn’t put off 160 U3A members who attended the South East Forum at Chichester University in Sussex. Seminars included Writing Your Life Story, studying Psychology, Music, Art and Maths or simply walking the beautiful South Downs.

The Northern Ireland Summer School was held at Greenmount Agricultural College, Antrim, where the two days of activities included Floristry, Drama and learning the ukulele. Key speaker Anna Lo, spoke on her experiences of coming from China to Belfast in the 1970s.

Summer Schools are a good example of the U3A peer to peer learning model. All the tutors are U3A members and attendees share knowledge with each other in a participatory learning experience.

Joyce Gibson from North Down & Ards U3A said, “The Northern Ireland Summer School was a first class programme, varied and interesting with something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the talk about the history of food and the lecture on ‘Mindfulness in the garden’.

Former Maths teacher Roger Luther from Preston Park U3A in Brighton led the South East seminar on Maths. He said, “The U3A movement is a wonderful way to share with each other subjects we are fascinated by. The U3A movement has a lot of experience and skill within it”
