u3a clean up

Olton & District U3A have teamed up with the Borough Council Love Solihull team to carry out a much needed gardening makeover on greenery outside the town’s library.

The team tided up and weeded the overgrown shrub beds, spread compost and planted the new lavender shrubs to give the library a welcome boost.

Olton & District U3A purchased the compost and shrubs using some of the £1,000 funds awarded to them by the West Midlands Police Commissioner.  The Active Citizens Fund is made up of money taken from criminals and handed out to community groups around the region.

Member of Olton and District U3A, Carmel Deakin said, “I loved the fact that passers-by were  so positive about what we were doing.  A tarmac workers van was waiting at the traffic lights and the guys inside were all cheering us on!”

Community Engagement Officer at Solihull Metropolitan Brough Council Shameena Villars, said ‘Thanks to everyone from U3A – I had a great day with you all and it has made such a positive difference to the area’.

Chairman of Olton & District U3A, Jo Robinson added, “It was a delight for us to be able to use this money to help the community.  Now our U3A volunteers are hoping their hard work will benefit local butterflies, bees as well as booklovers!

“The Love Solihull Team and Olton and District U3A are planning to team up regularly in future to ensure the beds are regularly maintained.”
