Foyle U3A in Northern Ireland has won the Active Travel Award at the Derry City & Strabane District Council’s Annual Sports Awards.
Derry City and Strabane District Council in conjunction with the District Sports Forum came together to identify sporting achievements and to publicly recognise those individuals, teams and clubs that have contributed to sport in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.
U3A Foyle won the very first Active Travel Award which recognised the efforts of groups or individuals who have gone above and beyond in promoting and encouraging people to walk and/or cycle more.
Foyle U3A’s Christine O’Kane said “There are two Cycling groups and two Long Walks groups, a Short Walks group, a Hillwalking group and a Nordic Walking group. This has helped towards keeping older people fit and healthy and engaged. Engagement in groups builds confidence and reduces social isolation and builds friendships for older people while keeping fit and active”
