'Climber on Mont BGlanc' by Valerie Salveson, Camberley u3a,

I used cling film and salt to add texture to this watercolour. I took the photograph of this climber on Mont Blanc indeed a challenge for any climber.

The dawn of a new day can be a big challenge for some that they would like to escape from. The boat depicts that escape.

'Always Trying to Keep Up' by Carole Goodhall, Steyning u3a

'Always Trying to Keep Up' by Carole Goodhall, Steyning u3a

Memories of a child, always trying to keep up. This is of a family bike ride up the hill. I remember my legs hurting trying to pedal, and being desperate to keep up with them. And mum trying get my younger sister to keep still, to make it easier for her to pedal.

'Embroidered picture' by Jean Eisenhauer, Berwick-upon-Tweed u3a

'Embroidered picture' by Jean Eisenhauer, Berwick-upon-Tweed u3a

This hopefully is an embroidered picture taken from a page in a New Zealand calendar sent to me in 2020 by my penpal. It is my first attempt at embroidering a picture. I copied the outlines and backstitched them in filling in with threads in the same way as I would paint a picture. It is a cuckoo in wild clematis.

'Spot the Bottle' by Lyn Morris, Buxton u3a

'Spot the Bottle' by Lyn Morris, Buxton u3a

The Challenge is - "Spot the Bottle". This is a doodle I just did at the end of our u3a group's "Still Life" theme. I learned that Still Life is about finding interesting ways to place OBJECTS within BACKGROUNDS. The OBJECT here is the Bottle, which I have hidden in the BACKGROUND. I've turned it into a colouring page. Can you Spot the Bottle?

'Departure' by Katherine Lane-Serff, Marple u3a

'Departure' by Katherine Lane-Serff, Marple u3a

Collage from magazine pictures. I was struck by all the photos of women and children leaving by train from Kiev station, waving goodbye to their fathers, husbands and sons who were staying behind to fight. They will all be encountering challenges I can barely imagine.

The painting is of Lower Hardres and the barge Edith May, at 6.00 am when we arrived for a day trip. I loved the light, so atmospheric, though it took a while to get right. Painting is acrylic.
