Apple Picking
Once when we were apple picking at Hatfield Peverel during the war, a plane came over and we could hear the shooting and we lay down with a wooden box over our heads. As if we could save ourselves by doing so!
We used to try saving our bus fares home and hitched for lifts. We arrived home on all sorts of vehicles. One was a lorry with several great trees and it swung round all over the road with us clinging to the tree trunks.
Actually, when I look back it was one of the happiest times of my life. It seems awful to say that due to the fact that the war was on.
