This initiative was an opportunity for u3a members to show off the wide variety of crafting skills that exist across the membership. Each month we will be sharing examples and guidance from members about their craft in the hope of inspiring more innovation and creation. Why not get your u3a craft group involved and learn a new crafting skill together?
If have an idea for the next craft skill we can showcase or would be willing to put together a tutorial on a craft form then please get in touch at
This initative is now closed.
See below some of the entries sent in for the theme of sculpture:

Froggy by Kate Loxton of Trust u3a
I adore frogs, I have some in the garden, which I photograph and use as models in my crafting. This Froggy is one of a pair, this one placed in spring, the other in autumn. Everything is made from clay, including the stones and water detail. Once the figure is made, I mount him on the wood, and then make the dressings separately, and mount them around the figure.
Elaine Cross of Thatcham u3a
My 1st attempt at sculpting! It’s (meant to be) a hare if anyone was wondering! Made from packed newspapers, wire, cloth, lace and fripperies! All bound together with sculpting glue and acrylic paint. (My husband thought it was a sheep!?). Need more practice I think.
Indian Yoya Figure by Margaret Scott of Omagh u3a
My figure was created on a wireframe using a tee-shirt, a polystyrene oval, lace and trinkets dipped in paverpol "glue" and moulded onto the frame, then mounted on a log. Quite a messy craft! Yoga was the inspiration.
