If you are starting out, go canny! Take your time, pick up a dance style that suits you and enjoy the experience. Women have often experienced dance in some forms, whereas men may be trying out dance for the first time. In Ballroom we have leaders and followers, men generally take the lead role, so women be patient whilst the early steps are being taught. Try to let the men find their feet, you will be amply rewarded when they do!
Another U3A Cockermouth dance group we have, works in a team with Latin rhythms danced in formation. This we have managed to keep going during the Covid time. I choreographed a routine for dancers that fit the prescribed social distancing rules. At other times we met on Zoom focussing on a bit of technique using many of the excellent teaching resources posted on youtube. We found Alexey perfect for warm up exercises and a Korean dance team called Bliss dance sport to put us through our paces. Currently the group are meeting when the weather allows, to dance in front of a residential care home window. This has been a ‘saver’ having something in the diary to which we can all look forward to.
