This painting is soft pastel on black fine grade sandpaper, 30x40cm. I found the focus and intensity of the lion very engaging and the mane allowed a freedom to use large sweeping strokes. Thank goodness modern day circuses do not have lions in them…. Such a magnificent animal deserves better treatment.

When circus was announced as the theme this image came into my mind, just so much more than a clown. Sad & dark thoughts??

I am working on a series of 16 ceramic Ladies of a Certain Age Growing Old Disgracefully. Friends and local charity shop workers have contributed acrobatic poses they wish they could (still) do. I drew this one to show them.

This is from a photo of a performer in a parade we saw whilst on holiday with family and it reminds me of happy times. 

I did a daytime sketch and then decided to try and turn it into a night time painting

My view of circus, in pencil and watercolour. They always seemed sad places to me, this clown is taking moment away from the hype and the glitz, perhaps he's missing home or having a place to settle, or maybe just a quick 40 winks before the next show.

I was inspired to do this painting by the sunny days we have been having lately. Now with the longer days starting next week it makes me think of open air festivals where there will be people showing off their circus skills.

I thought Piccadilly circus would be a good idea for the prompt and hope I have conveyed the hustle and bustle of it (in water-mixable oils).

What goes around comes around - complete "life is a Circus".....not a circle !!!

I did this watercolour painting Walking in my shadow whilst on Madeira recently which reminded me of a circus performer.
