IGO August 24 News Extra
Hello and welcome to the August edition of News Extra. You have received this because we send a copy to all 1250 of our members of Interest Groups Online.
If you are a brand-new member, you will shortly be invited to a new member meeting where you’ll have chance to ask questions about anything puzzling you currently. But for now, you can read about our new groups and start up groups, and News from a couple of our well-established groups. Plus you can read a poem written by Elizabeth one of our members, answer a few questions in our quiz corner and learn how to concoct a lovely summer salad.

Russian Reading and Conversation
This group is for students with an intermediate level of Russian who wish to maintain and expand their Russian language skills. Our Zoom sessions will consist of two parts. In the first 30 minutes, we shall take turns reading a story in easy Russian from “Russian Short Stories for Beginners”. In the second part, we will discuss the story (guided by the book “Questions about the Story”). We shall meet every second and fourth Tuesday from 10 to 11 am. Join now (click the web link above) in time for the first meeting 10th September.
This group meets monthly to discuss a range of sociological questions. Explaining what sociology is isn’t easy because any shorthand explanation is always, at best, bound to be inadequate and, at worst, contested. However, broadly it is the rigorous and systematic study of societies, social structures, social institutions and human social behaviour.
Italian - Start Up Meeting
CIAO! – SALVE! – PRONTO?
Come along to the first meeting to discuss how the sessions will run, when and how often.
The start-up meeting will be held on Thursday 29th August at 10:30am.
Please join the group on Beacon if you would like to attend. Catherine will be attending the meeting as groups coordinator to help to set up the group. It will be up to the people attending to decide how the group will run.
Someone (or more than one) will need to volunteer to manage the meetings, and someone will need to manage group communication using Beacon - we can provide support with this.
Pilates - Start Up Meeting
Pilates uses a combination of approximately 50 simple, repetitive exercises to create muscular exertion. Advocates of this system of exercise claim that exercises can be adapted to provide either gentle strength training for rehabilitation (or a strenuous workout vigorous enough to challenge skilled athletes). Which of these choices are you interested in? Come along to the first meeting to discuss the options…
The start-up meeting will be held on Monday 6th August at 10:30am. Please join the group on Beacon if you would like to attend.
Catherine will be attending the meeting as groups coordinator to help to set up the group. It will be up to the members of the meeting to decide how the group will run. If none of the members present is a trained Pilates instructor, you will need to decide is this group can be run without one, and you will also need to consider whether members need to complete a risk assessment to participate in the group.
Someone (or more than one) will need to volunteer to manage the meetings, and someone will need to manage group communication using Beacon - we can provide support with this.

- What are you Watching?
- It could be a film at the cinema, a BBC documentary on iPlayer, a theatre show, a streamed series on Netflix, anything goes – IGO has 5 'What are you Reading' groups, so why not be part of the first 'What are you watching' group...
- Virtual Walks
- Why not introduce your group members to one of Wainwright's walks that you would like to achieve? Or some photos from your last walk with the family, or your local walking group? My dream walk would be Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater - what’s yours? Join the Start up group on Beacon.
- Tennis Talk
- The Olympics gave China its first tennis gold, Zheng in the women’s singles and of course Djokovic completed his set of championships with Olympic gold - the fantastic Jasmine Paolini with her partner Errani took gold in the womens doubles with the Australian pair Ebden and Peers winning gold in the men’s doubles. As we leave the clay courts behind, we look forward to the hard courts in the US open and then onto Australia in the new year, then we’ll be back at Roland Garros and in no time at all we’ll be at SW19 again. Sign up to discuss who’s up and who’s on the way down in the ATP stakes …
Pop-up Poetry Group
Pop-up Poetry is a relaxed and friendly poetry discussion group - rather like a book group, but with much smaller texts! We meet once a fortnight and discuss four widely differing poems linked by topic. All sorts of ideas arise, and we generally laugh quite a lot. The group is kept small to allow each member time to share their thoughts, but we currently have a vacancy. You may be a poetry expert, you may not have read a poem since you left school - the only qualification required is curiosity!

'Black Dog'
A poem by IGO member Elizabeth
Why do you seek me out?
Why am I favoured with your foul breath?
When you sit on my shoulder
You stop me seeing, feeling, being.
Your dank, dark hair hides my world.
You breathe sullenly into my mind
As you take over my life.
You settle, heavily, grossly on me.
You know when to come..
When I am sad, unloved, alone.
You take advantage
Moodily growling pessimism.
You will come again, I know,
Next time and the next,
Until a day will come when
I give in to your bleak embrace.
Not soon. Not soon.
