Interest Groups Online Groups

This group meets monthly to discuss a range of sociological questions. Explaining what sociology is isn’t easy because any shorthand explanation is always, at best, bound to be inadequate and, at worst, contested. However, broadly it is the rigorous and systematic study of societies, social structures, social institutions and human social behaviour.

The questions sociologists ask range from general ones like ‘What is society?’ to more specific ones like ‘Why do some social groups have an apparently higher crime rate than some other groups?’ to ‘Why has the divorce rate soared in Britain since WWII?’ to ‘Why has the three-minute love song dominated popular music for the last 70 years?’. In fact, sociology studies all aspects of social life.
