Future Lives is a UK-wide u3a group which shares information and resources to inspire, influence and inform members about how we can improve our future lives.

How can we add life to our years, and maintain our independence and quality of life for as long as possible?

The u3a Future Lives Group is run by u3a members across the country. We aim to challenge attitudes and break down physical barriers that limit and restrict people as they get older.

What can we do to improve unsuitable homes or products, isolation and poor health? Good design can be liberating – and the reverse is true! Let’s use our collective voice to bring about change.

We want to hear what u3a members have to say, share information and stimulate ideas that will help us all live our best possible future lives.

  • We host a series of free online events that we’d love you to join. You can access the slides and some videos for which we have copyright compliance - see previous online webinars.

The evolution of AI and our changing world

Wed 11 March, 2pm

Barry Claydon

AI is the new chapter in a story that started two hundred years ago. AI is the new noisy kid on the block. It can do amazing things. Make good things better and bad things worse. How is your AI literacy?

Join Barry Claydon as he talks about the impact AI is having and will have on people, relationships and society. After this event you will feel more confident, moving from AI ignorance to AI literacy. You will be able to engage in meaningful conversations with family and friends. Maybe you will also be able to influence our government on AI Safety legislation.

Planning for the later years

Mon 27 April, 2pm

Sir Peter Thornton KC

In this talk, Sir Peter Thornton KC, author of The Later Years: The simple guide to organising the rest of your life, takes you step by step through the options for preparing for more difficult times.

This practical and purposeful guide helps us - before it’s too late - to get organised. Mental or physical disability may strike suddenly (a stroke or heart attack) or slowly (dementia or Parkinson’s). With just a little preparation while we are fit and healthy, we can express our wishes now. Think about not just a will, Lasting Powers of Attorney or other formal documents, but also simple, positive steps for maintaining independence longer. And making it easier for those we leave behind.

If you have any suggestions for speakers or topics please get in touch with us by email. In the meantime, you can catch up on any talks you missed below or, better still, watch them again.

Our Homes for Our Future

Will your home support your independence in the years ahead?

Perhaps you will need to adapt it in some way?
Have you thought of moving? If so, what do you want?

The sooner we plan for our future housing needs, the better the outcome – the right home can add 5 years of independent living.

We encourage you to grab a cuppa and set aside 10 minutes to think about these important questions.

We did a survey in 2023 asking these very questions and the findings were illuminating. To read more about it, head to our Resources page.
