Established group - Justice, Law and Society - groups 1 and 2
True or False*: Our Human Rights, outlined in the European Convention of Human Rights - were created to protect UK citizens from unjust and repressive powers carried out by the Government and State Agencies (e.g. Police, Army, NHS).
When the JLS Group discussed Human Rights law recently, there was surprise at just how much of our usual freedoms in life we owe to that seemingly simple list of 16 Rights.
Away from often divisive narrative in the media, the JLS Discussion Group helps us look at what the law is really doing, where it affects our everyday life and how justice operates.
An engaging range of law and justice topics are discussed with an open mind and compassion.

Book Club News
Note about the IGO Book Club June 2025 from the group leader – Well, the IGO Book Club has split in two. We are still speaking to each other. The number of people joining our discussions has steadily increased and we reached the point where it was difficult for everyone to contribute to the discussion. Our new arrangement is that we meet twice a month. We discuss the same book but with a different person leading the two sessions. This means that we have some room for new members.
We've also been busy choosing new books. Over 30 were suggested by book club members. We voted on them and we now have sufficient books to last us to December next year. The first three are North Woods by Daniel Mason, Cuddy by Ben Myers and Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Hooray! All this means that we've returned to what book clubs are all about, namely enjoying reading books and discussing them.

Tell us about your great group leader
We know, at Interest Groups Online, how vital our Group Leaders are, but we’d love to hear about them from you!
- Is your group leader amazing?

Please write a few lines about how they have made your time in the group really worthwhile and email
Where in the World?
Events similar to the one pictured took place in the North of England, 5–11 June. Can you name the place and the event?
Answers at the end
How about getting involved?
Can you get a little more involved?
The whole of the u3a runs by the members for the members – we need volunteers to take on the job of establishing new groups, organising meetings and communicating with group members - each of our groups in Interest Groups Online has a Group Leader/ organiser – these jobs don’t necessarily need you to be very knowledgeable about the subjects covered by the group. A continuing interest can often be the essential attribute, particularly since there are lots of existing u3a subject advisers and national initiatives that IGO group leaders can hang their hat on so to speak – to give you an idea here are some examples:
-
Imagine you are interested in helping get a Food and Cookery group established – there’s a national u3a Air Fryer Community which IGO members could get involved with and discuss recipes etc. Air Fryer Community.
-
Imagine you want to help run an essay writing group – there’s a national essay competition each year that group members could enter – Essay Competition.
-
For photography groups there’s a couple of initiatives that could be incorporated into an Interest Groups Online group u3a Eye and Found-in-Nature.
-
Paint or Draw has monthly themed galleries all budding artists could access – Paint or Draw,
There are also lots of subject based networks you and your group could access to add a further dimension to your group and its discussions u3a subject networks.
There’s help on hand if you want to take the plunge and become more involved in Interest Groups Online we offer training and support for group leaders - talk to us at
