New Group – Modern Art (24/7)
A new group, with its own style and approach, is looking to find a way for progress and development. Member participation and contributions are essential, no matter how large or small. Always share positive support and ideas, with no criticism.
I like Modern Art, with all its ‘isms’, covering a period from the early to mid-1800s through to the 1970s. I include Pop Art and Post Modern, which extend beyond this period. Strictly speaking the Modern Art period is between the1860’s and 1970’s, this then includes the artists like Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Matisse, Gauguin, Chagall, Dali, Pollock, Hopper, Manet, Cezanne, Picasso, and Lowry, extending then into Contemporary Art which includes Vettriano, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Warhol, and Blake.
My own interest was triggered through many enjoyable investigatory visits to the Tate Modern, along with the study of design, design process and design management. I have a general interest in the Industrial Revolution and the development of often related technologies, and how this has profoundly affected our Social History, artistic developments, designs, styles, fads and the everyday world which surrounded us.
The problem is that I am a retired Engineer, where Art mostly and usually just passed me by, I am, though, very much an ‘I like what I like’ person, who has a mostly unsatisfied yearning for learning, and experiencing more.
If you are looking to learn about Modern Art or can bring existing knowledge and experience to the group, you are most welcome to join this new and exciting IGO journey. The group will be easy going, encouraging, and always sharing. It is to remain enjoyable, informal and informative. It will be fun, rewarding and provide a lot of laughs.
The group uses WhatsApp (WA) to easily and simply share and communicate, and most likely a few Zoom meetings. Chats will evolve, around particular pieces of Art, Artists, Themes, ‘ism,’ and much more. They will include the results of a little or more research, providing something of interest and learning for the members.
The Modern Art WhatsApp Group has sections available which are related, over time. The opportunity is there to feature Modern and ‘industrial’ Design.
The benefits of using WhatsApp are – it is open and available 24/7, members can join in and share and contribute as much as they may wish to, whenever they wish to, and it is secure. WhatsApp provides a protected and safe inclusive sharing and social space for all.

Appreciation for our Great Group Leaders
Shared Art Appreciation
Thank you for the opportunity to sing the praises of the indefatigable group leaders! I would like to say three cheers for John Shirland of the Art Appreciation Group. I used to attend John's u3a art appreciation classes in his house in Canterbury before I moved to Lincolnshire 5 years ago, and was delighted when he started the online group. For more than 3 years, I have been a member and enjoy the weekly contributions from other members of the group, who are scattered all over the country. It is so wonderful to exchange views on a painting, architecture, sculpture, etc., even if it is sometimes not to our particular liking. However, we are all very polite, and I have learnt so much from this course. John is always so positive and, as he often says, keeps smiling!

Cinema!
Rob Townsend, an excellent hard hard-working tutor. I have learned so much from him. He also sends links to relevant materials to add to our knowledge of cinema. He certainly knows his subject, has good control of the group on Zoom and is excellent at making the topics interesting and stimulating. Well done, Rob!👍

Cryptic Crosswords
Just a short note to say how much I’m enjoying cryptic crosswords. They have Zoom sessions twice a month, and it’s so nice to work in small groups and get to know each other. This complements the once monthly local face to face group. Elaine Ross has taken over from Marion and is so welcoming and puts us at ease. Joy to come to these sessions.

Praise for News Extra
This message came to interest groups online the other day...
Hello Helen,
I’ve already emailed Jim to say what a good newsletter this is. The Padlet version is miles better than the website version. You’re doing an amazing job as editor. Well done! And I should have repeated what I told Jim – it was very interesting to learn about the IGO “Team”
Best wishes – Maria, member of coffee and conversation
Note from the editor – this is why we produce the newsletter in different formats. Some people prefer the web version and some the Padlet version. We try to cater for all preferences. If you don't want to read and look at the pictures, have you tried the audio version yet?
