Cinema
The main prerequisite for participation in the Cinema (formerly Film Studies) group is a liking for and an interest in cinema. Thereafter, a willingness to watch movie excerpts (freely available online) and to read some academic/critic writing on cinema; to reflect on what you've watched and read; and to contribute to a friendly, inclusive discussion of 'The Seventh Art' during the Zoom sessions.
There are many possible topics and approaches to a discussion of cinema in online meetings: Historical; Genre; The Film Director as Auteur; 'Stars'; Movements; The Film Business; 'Specialist' Cinema'; Mise en Scène – the contribution of Music, Design, Editing, Endings etc. to the reception of a film.
In keeping (roughly speaking) with the u3a motto of Learn, Laugh, Live! the Film Studies sessions will aim to be illuminating, enjoyable and inclusive, and, importantly, varied.
