Sailing Network

For a few years now a group of u3a sailing enthusiasts have been out in the Med on bareboat charters. This was founded by Nick Hoskins, u3a Boating Advisor, and now Tim Steene is Group Co-ordinator. We met and joined the group after the lockdown in 2021, first meeting on Zoom, and then in 2022 in Croatia for our first trip. We now want to extend the invitation to other members to join in and sail with us.

We have a good selection of skippers and crew and everyone takes part in all things on the boats from washing up to helming.

Our aim is to enjoy sailing and practise our skills in navigation, boat handling and seamanship. There are opportunities for mile building needed in between sailing courses. We encourage members to develop their skills through RYA sailing qualifications.

We hope to form a community of sailing members who come together to learn and support each other in a relaxed and enjoyable way. And this is how the u3a Sailing Network has evolved.

The u3a Sailing Network is open to anyone interested in sailing and navigation. Many members may have their own boats and appreciate the advantages of having experienced crew and sailing in good company. Many crewing members may be delighted to learn from these experiences, gaining skills and knowledge. It’s a two way win-win for all.

By bringing together skippers and crews in a wide programme of sailing and social activities we create a sailing community for all to enjoy.

What are our aims?

  • Expand an interest in sailing within u3a – leading to new groups and new members for existing groups
  • Support existing groups to develop by sharing resources and best practice
  • Create new opportunities for learning beyond the local u3a group structure such as bareboat charters in the Mediterranean and UK
  • Introduce winter events and talks
  • Promote u3a members by showcasing their achievements in developing skills and knowledge

How can we do this?

  • Encourage u3a members to enjoy sailing activities such as safe navigation, seamanship and boat handling
  • Provide opportunities for beginners and returners to sailing to develop their skills and competences, which will lead on to progression through the RYA courses
  • Encourage u3a members to access RYA courses to develop sailing skills
  • Provide opportunities for mile building and practical skills
  • Offer winter talks e.g. sailing techniques, safety issues, and boat handling
  • Encourage social gatherings to have fun on and off the water

Members can draw upon the expertise and knowledge of others in a friendly sociable atmosphere, and develop lasting relationships along the way.
