Bloomsbury representative Alysoun Owen spoke of the ‘extremely high calibre’ of U3A writing talent at our inaugural awards ceremony for the winners of the U3A Creative Writing Competition.

An inspiring 342 members submitted short stories on the theme ‘Time.’ Regional judges created a shortlist of 13, with a winner from each region. The competition standard was so high that there was a tie in the East Midlands, resulting in two winners.

Rosemary Burton of Oxford U3A was crowned the overall winner at the STAR (Story Themed Award Results) event for her story ‘The Clock’ whilst Penny Holland and Gillian Griffith came in second and third place.

Alysoun Owen, Editor of the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook, was one of the judges and attended the event saying, ‘It was an extremely pleasant time reading on and commenting on these stories. The quality was really impressive.”

Alison May, Learning Manager, said of the event, “Thank you to everyone who entered the competition. The standard was extremely high – any one of the shortlisted entries could have won, and the judges had an extremely difficult job.

The top three stories were read out at the STAR awards to an extremely positive reception. The depth of creative writing talent across the movement is clear”.
