Women Take Up the Bat for International Women's Day Event

u3a, along with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, hosted an International Women's Day walking cricket match to celebrate women in the sport.

Yorkshire u3a allcomers and Leeds u3a women teams played at Headingley Cricket Ground. Liz, a member of Leeds u3a who took part in the match, says “It’s brilliant that we’re having this special match on International Women’s Day.

“Anything that brings women together and elevates them in the spotlight is something that is very positive.”

Dickie Bird OBE, retired international cricket umpire who umpired in 66 test matches, was the special guest at this event and oversaw the coin toss at the beginning of the match. A supporter of walking cricket since it's launch in 2019, he was made an honorary member of u3a by Barnsley u3a Chair Alan Swann.

Walking cricket was devised in 2019 by Mac, a member of Barnsley u3a and now u3a's Subject Adviser for Walking Cricket. He envisioned it as a more accessible adaptation of cricket to enable people of varying mobility and abilities to take part.

Mac says of the match, “It’s an exciting day – this is the very first women’s match in Yorkshire for Walking Cricket and it is so important to me.

“We do hope that this inspires more women to come and join and attend a Walking Cricket group near them.”
