u3a Rewind: the fifties

A 1950s dance hall

Violet, Cardiff u3a

It was an exciting time to be young in the late 1950s with the coming of Elvis Presley and Heartbreak Hotel. We wore full flouncy skirts, not trousers then, and went to dances where we jived. We were all working, mostly in offices. Cliff Richard was the big UK star and we queued in a great long queue in one of our city centre cinemas to see him in Summer Holiday. They were quite innocent times really. There were Teddy Boys but there was never any trouble contrary to what might have been recorded. We didn't have much money. We used to go to a local beach on Sundays on the train and would listen to the Top 20 on the transistor radio which was on at about 5 pm for an hour. The beach was a teenagers' venue.
