I have been a casting director for many years working predominantly in theatre and most particularly for Alan Ayckbourn. I am now semi-retired, and I also give talks (sometimes to visiting U3A groups!) on the paintings collection at the Garrick Club in central London.

A talk about life as a casting director. A frank and funny behind-the-scenes look at how productions come to life by casting the right (and potentially the wrong) actors. Psychology, creativity, and sometimes the politics of casting, are all discussed and illustrated with slides.

This talk with slides covers five colourful and pioneering female actors of the 18th century - Margaret Hughes, Kitty Clive, Sarah Siddons, Emma Hamilton and Dora Jordan. Royal connections, scandals and the rise of 18th century celebrity culture make it a fascinating hour's talk.
