Croydon u3a member has won first place in a Flash Writing competition.
Margaret Chan won Gold place in the Wenlock Olympian’s Society first Flash Writing competition for her story, 'All That is Gold Does not Glitter.'
Croydon u3a’s Writing for Pleasure group, of which Margaret is a member, meets twice a month on Zoom for two-hour long sessions. The u3a Creative Writing newsletter, sent out by subject advisor Marcia Humphreys, is where Margaret first heard of the competition and decided to enter.
Margaret said, "I have told and written stories for as long as I can remember. The Lockdown last year gave me more time for writing and joining the Croydon u3a ‘Writing for Pleasure’ group gave me the stimulus of regular deadlines and the support of fellow writers.
"The pandemic had got me thinking about the things that are most important to us and how many of our individual freedoms we are willing to give up to protect them. This dystopian story was the result. I hope it also shows the resilience of humankind and our ability to adapt and to find happiness, even in difficult circumstances..."
