As a child, I lived in Epsom, Surrey, and our summer half-term was always different to other places. I remember lining the road, complete with flag, to wave at the Royal family on their way to the Derby (in those days, it was held on a Wednesday).
The first time was just after the war, with the King and Queen, Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth - I don’t remember Princess Margaret being in the carriage. I don’t remember learning about the death of the King but like half the population we purchased our first television (all of a 9 inch screen) to watch the coronation.
