Congratulations to Carol, Veronica and Alice who were awarded winners of the 2024 u3a short story competition at the annual STAR awards.
The annual u3a short story competition, described as a “really important event in the UK’s literary calendar” by judge Alysoun Owen, celebrated creative writing last night at the STAR awards ceremony. Launched during the pandemic in 2020, the competition continues to highlight the creative talent within the u3a movement.
This year’s competition attracted over 450 entries, making it one of the most competitive to date. Judges Alysoun, editor of Bloomsbury’s Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook, Creative Writing Subject Advisor Marcia, and former Trustee for Wales Hilary Jones faced the difficult task of narrowing them down to a shortlist of 17.
Congratulations to the winners - Carol, Veronica and Alice.
First place: Carol (Southport u3a) with Demon Eye
Second place: Veronica (Thameside u3a) with One-Cent Boy – A Story from Africa
Third place: Alice (Flintshire u3a) with A Room With a View
The awards ceremony, held virtually, gave judges, entrants and members the opportunity to hear the top three stories read aloud. All 17 shortlisted entrants will receive a copy of the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook as part of Bloomsbury’s continued support for the competition.
