A new video has been released to celebrate u3a week, which showcases the highlights of the first ever national u3a Festival, held this summer at the University of York.
The festival was a historic moment for u3a, as it brought together over 900 members from across the UK. It was particularly special for one married couple who in the video talk about meeting over 50 years ago as students at the university.
Margaret Fiddes, Trustee for Yorkshire and the Humber and key organiser of the festival shares the reasons for organising the event: "the festival is really a celebration of everything that happens in u3as every day, in every city and town across the UK."
Over three days, participants engaged in a wide range of activities, including workshops, talks, musical performances, and sports tournaments. All of these were led by u3a members themselves, who shared their knowledge and skills with others.
"I was dancing just now. Now I'm doing flowers - wonderful!" says one attendee, "it doesn't matter if you're own your own. I've met so many people and everybody is so friendly here."
"Not every community's got these opportunities, have they?" says another, trying out pétanque for the first time. "So I'm trying different things that you don't get a chance to do in every day life. It's good to learn something new."
These experiences exemplify the energy of the festival and the values of being a member of the u3a. In the video, you can hear more from u3a members about trying new things, making new friends, sharing skills, and broadening horizons.
