Exploring Prog Rock

Progressive rock, often abbreviated as prog rock, is a subgenre of rock music that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. It is characterized by ambitious compositions, experimentation, concept-driven lyrics, and musical virtuosity. The genre aims to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility, often incorporating elements from classical music and jazz.
Initially, we’ll be exploring the more popular groups that fall into this category. Over time, collectively, we’ll gradually move from 1969 to the present day, exploring the different genres, playing tracks and watching videos. We’ll be looking back through history and comparing Melody Maker and New Musical Express publications.
We will explore the Top 20 albums from a particular month chosen. We will investigate group histories on suitable websites. And last but not least, we will review the LP sleeve artworks.
Members will be encouraged to choose tracks, and hopefully I’ll be able to find them from my extensive library.
The artwork is by the group leader, Paul Vickery.
