We are pleased to announce that Margaret Fiddes has been elected as the new Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Third Age Trust.

A long standing member of the u3a movement, Margaret Fiddes first joined Sherburn & Villages u3a 14 years ago. For the last four years, she has served as Trustee for the Yorkshire and Humber region of u3as.

This year, Margaret Fiddes was heavily involved in the organisation of u3a Festival 24, the largest meeting of u3a members in the movement’s history. The festival, which took place over three days and saw members taking part in walking football tournaments, giving and watching talks, and performing a wide range of music. In the spirit of the member-led event, Margaret even led a workshop which saw members creating floral crowns.

Margaret has a rich range of experience from her career, where she worked in a variety of roles including guesthouse landlady, BBC Researcher, garden designer and Sales Director. In her supporting statement for the role of Vice Chair, Margaret remarked, “I must like change. You could also say that I am not afraid of a challenge.”

Speaking of her vision for the u3a movement, Margaret said, “I really want the u3a experience to be open to as wide a section of the population as possible. We know how beneficial membership is and how much it can do for people mentally, physically and socially. Currently we have almost 400,000 members – looking at the number of people of our generation there are many hundreds of thousands more who could be members of u3a.”

Margaret will start her new role for the Trust on Wednesday 16 October 2024 after the AGM.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the candidates who chose to stand and all u3as for taking part in the election process.
