Way back In 1959 there was a mining disaster at Auchingeoch Pit near Steps just outside Glasgow and I remember being at school when this happened.
My father worked there at the time and on that very morning he was late for his shift. He was a very lucky man that day, as the cage that went down the pit had gone. I attended St Ninians school in Kirkintilloch, also the other schools in the areas would have been informed of the disaster.
We were informed by the teacher's on that morning that there was an incident at the pit and if you had anyone in your family working there you had to go home. Looking back on this day we were totally unaware of the situation.
